FileSentry PRO User Documentation Questions and Answers What is FileSentry PRO? FileSentry PRO is a small memory resident utility (uses only 9k of memory) that allows the user to block access to selected drives, directories, files, or file types to prevent unauthorized use or viewing of sensitive, private or personal information. How does FileSentry PRO work? FileSentry PRO secretly monitors all file access in the background. When a user attempts access to files that you have specifically defined as ones that you wish to keep private, FileSentry PRO steps in and creates a legitimate DOS error condition, effectively blocking access of any kind to the unsuspecting user. The actual error will vary with the method used by the user, but is harmless to your system and will not alter your files in any way. Is FileSentry PRO compatible with Windows? Yes, FileSentry PRO works under both DOS and Windows equally well. Is FileSentry PRO compatible with my network? Yes, FileSentry PRO works with ALL major network operating systems. Can I still access all files without problems? Certainly! Included are functions to deactivate and reactivate FileSentry PRO that only you will know how to use. What are some common uses? The uses are many and vary from user to user, but some of the best uses are: Keep co-workers and employers from accessing your personal files on your computer when you are away from your desk. Keep employees from accessing programs and data that you don’t want them to use. Prevent children from viewing or downloading sexually explicit graphics files. Included in the ZIP file: FSPRO.TXT - This file. FSPROTD.COM - This is the memory resident TEST DRIVE version of FileSentry PRO. It has all the same features as the standard version except that it displays a message upon loading. The standard version (which you have to pay for) displays no messages so you can load it without the user ever being aware of it. FSPROTD.CFG - A sample configuration file described later. FSOFF.COM - A small program that will de-activate FileSentry PRO. FSON.COM - A small program that will re-activate FileSentry PRO. BUYFSPRO.ZIP - A password protected ZIP file that contains the standard version of FileSentry PRO, without the loading message of the TEST DRIVE version. You can receive the password when placing a credit card order, either on-line or over the phone and begin using FileSentry PRO IMMEDIATELY. Setting Up and Using FileSentry PRO Setting up FileSentry PRO is quick and easy. First copy the files FSPROTD.COM, FSOFF.COM, and FSON.COM to your DOS directory or other directory of your choice. We will assume that you will use your DOS directory for any examples. Next, you have to create the FileSentry PRO configuration file. The configuration file must have the same name as the FileSentry PRO program, except with the extension .CFG. Since the name of the program is FSPROTD.COM we will use the file name FSPROTD.CFG for the configuration file. The configuration file MUST be located in the SAME directory as FSPROTD.COM. Using your text editor, create a new file called FSPROTD.CFG in your DOS directory. The following is an example of a typical configuration file: (included) F: WINWORD.EXE \MYFILES .GIF QUICKEN.EXE EMPLOYEE In the above example, we are restricting file access to certain files on your hard drive. In line 1, we are restricting access to all files on drive F:. This may be a CD- ROM for instance, or a network drive. In line 2, we are restricting access to the program WINWORD.EXE. This means that no one but you will be able to run that program. In line 3, we are restricting access to all files in the \MYFILES directory. This would apply to all files in any directory called \MYFILES, including directories called C:\WINDOWS\MYFILES, C:\FILES\MYFILES2, etc. In line 4, we are restricting access to all files with the extension .GIF. This would block viewing, downloading, or uploading all GIF files which is a common format for adult oriented picture files. In line 5, we are blocking access to Quicken. You could also block access to all files in the quicken directory including QUICKEN.EXE by using the line \QUICKEN assuming that these files are installed in a directory called \QUICKEN. In line 6, we are restricting access to any file with the word EMPLOYEE in either the file name or path. One note, all the expressions in the configuration file must be literal expressions. You cannot use DOS wild cards. For example, if you want to block access to all files with the extension .DBF, use the line .DBF. Do not use *.DBF. When you have created your configuration file and saved it, you will now want to modify your AUTOEXEC.BAT to call FileSentry PRO automatically each time you boot your computer. All you have to do is add the following line somewhere in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, preferably close to the top. We recommend you add this line immediately following your PATH statement. C:\DOS\FSPROTD.COM Then re-boot your computer. If you want access to the protected files all you have to do is type C:\DOS\FSOFF from the DOS prompt. This will deactivate FileSentry PRO. To re-activate it type C:\DOS\FSON. If the DOS directory is in your path, you need only type FSOFF and FSON. To unload FileSentry PRO, all you need to do is type FSPROTD /U. FileSentry PRO can also use multiple configuration files, or configuration files with a different name. Whatever configuration file you use, make sure that it resides in the same directory as the program FSPROTD.COM. To use a different configuration file, enter the filename after FSPROTD.COM. For example: C:\DOS\FSPROTD.COM MYFILE.CFG This will use a configuration file called MYFILE.CFG in the DOS directory. If you use multiple boot sections in your AUTOEXEC.BAT, this can be useful. For example, if you have two users, one named DON, and the other named DAVE, and have defined different boot up sequences in your AUTOEXEC.BAT called [DON] and [DAVE], you could have FSPROTD load using different configuration files for each. Tips for Extra Security You can rename any of the files included to whatever you want. Just make sure that the configuration file has the same name as the program file, or that you specify the name of the configuration file to be used. You can hide the configuration file from view by using the DOS ATTRIB command. For example: ATTRIB C:\DOS\FSPROTD.CFG +h This will make it a hidden file so that users will not accidentally stumble upon it.
